Refugee and immigrant movements and Black-led movements have many goals and values in common: resistance against systemic oppression, advocacy for historically undervalued lives and the desire for a more equitable society. Yet, Refugees and immigrants may be unfamiliar with the history of anti-Black oppression and resistance in the U.S., and Black Americans may not always recognize newcomers as potential allies. ARTogether is organizing a series of discussions to bring together Black and refugee activists, educators and artists to forge a conversation on coalition-building, community engagement and the role of the arts in social justice movements. 3 events, held over the next four months, will cover a wide range of issues dealing with the complex nature of true intersectional dialogue, and seeking to find a way forward.
