For the past two years, ARTogether’s Mentorship Hub program has worked with collectives of artists to build intentional relationships and networks of peer support, engaging in artistic development that centers their lived experiences as diasporic artists. The Mentorship Hub affirmed what we already knew to be true: that when artists come together as collaborators and co-conspirators, we step into our full creative power and make real the worlds we want to live in and deserve.
This is why when the space next door to The ARTogether Center (on 1200 Harrison Street In Downtown Oakland) suddenly became available, we knew we had to seize the chance to transform it into the ARTogether Studios, a shared makerspace for emerging artists participating in the Mentorship Hub. Starting in 2025, the Hub will expand into a multi-month artist development and residency program, during which emerging diasporic artists will participate in workshops and receive free shared studio space to deepen their practice.
“ARTogether has been a beacon of light in my artistic journey. As an immigrant artist, finding my footing in the art world in another country seemed like a daunting task, but ARTogether’s Mentorship Hub and ongoing support provided me with the guidance, support, and sense of belonging I needed to thrive. The program not only equipped me with practical skills but also connected me with a community of like-minded artists who understood the challenges and joys of immigrant life. The opportunity to have access to free shared studios would be a game-changer for artists like myself, providing a dedicated space to create, collaborate, and grow.”

On Friday, December 6, we will be unveiling the ARTogether Studios at “Gather In: Building Sanctuary with Immigrant and Refugee Artists.” The studios will be activated by eight Hub Alums who will be our Artists-In-Residence until our expanded Mentorship Hub and Residency applications open in Spring of 2025. In addition to exploring our new studios and meeting our current Artists-In-Residence, “Gather In” will feature a beautiful group exhibition showcasing past and present immigrant artists in our community, delicious homemade food, art activities, and more.
In an increasingly expensive and exclusive Bay Area–and during times of continuous grief, injustice, and trauma–it’s imperative that we come together to support free and welcoming spaces where immigrant and refugee artists can find reprieve, dream necessary dreams, and build together. We hope that you will gather with us on December 6th!
